estate agents in invernesshire estate agents in invernesshire::This is a unique opportunity to purchase a romantic hideaway on the remote peninsular of knoydart, known as the last remaining wilderness in the british isles.
It is situated in airor, a hamlet 7 miles from inverie, the village where the ferry comes in.
The drive along one of the last remaining unspoilt single track roads in the highlands is full of stunning views of mountains and moorland, the sound of sleat and the wonderful islands of eigg and rhum.
This five bedroomed, 2 bathroomed cosy house stands in one of the most beautiful locations on the west coast of scotland.
It is a perfect sailing area along the sound of sleat, and airor bay is the perfect place to moor a boat.
The sunsets over the cuillins from the sitting room window, the changing light and the moody sea are a continual fascination.
Directly in front of the house, the islands of airor shelter the picturesque bay where you can watch seals basking, otters playing and, if your lucky, schools of porpoise or dolphins swimming by.
All of this you can explore in kayaks.
Seabirds, flora and fauna abound.
From the garden you can look across to isle ornsay lighthouse or up to the kyles of lochalsh.
In the distance you can spot the place where gavin maxwell lived and wrote the ring of bright water, in fact the house is almost identical to the one he lived in.
There are 3 bedrooms upstairs and 2 reception rooms, kitchen and a bathroom downstairs.
The dining room has an open fire and oilfired rayburn that heats the radiators and hot water.
The sitting room has a log burning stove.
Leading from the dining room is the modern pine kitchen with all new white goods with french windows leading to the garden.
There is a porch on the front of the house.
Attached and leading from the kitchen there is access to the annexe, which has a further bedroom, bathroom and small new kitchen with wood burning stove which can double up as a 5th bedroom.
This annexe has the capability of being let as a separate entity.
The house has an excellent letting history and very good reviews with many people returning year after year.
The house is powered by a diesel generator with a modern 24v inverter and battery system.
There is also a central heating boiler.
For people interested in alternative energy, there is the possibility of building a hydro system on the burn, which has been effectively done by two of our neighbours.
The water comes via a filter from the burn.
The pipes in the attic have recently been completely reinsulated and trace heating installed to prevent burst pipes.
Most of the house has been refurbished.
Airor bay has a lovely sandy area, a large pebble and shell beach, rock pools, bolders and a pier to jump off at high tide.
When it is low tide a sandspit appears which is fun for beach games.
In inverie there is the famous old forge pub, the guinness book of records most remote pub.
There is quite often live music.
There is a wonderful restaurant at doune off the road to inverie.
The road actually finishes just before the house, so there is no passing traffic except the intrepid school teacher or crofter that live beyond.
The western isles ferry owned by bruce watts comes from mallaig twice a day, monday, wednesday and friday during winter, and monday to friday from may to september.
This not only brings visitors, but takes the locals to all the facilities on the mainland, and delivers the groceries into inverie.
An unofficial ferry service goes twice a day every day at other times and there are many boats going backwards and forwards to mallaig.
The caledonian sleeper leaves euston at 9 pm and arrives the next morning at fort william where you have a choice of coming to mallaig on the jacobite steam train, in time to catch the ferry, or the normal train.
Apart from catching mackeral, crab and lobster, there are munros to climb, wonderful coastal and hill walks to enjoy and an incredibly peaceful place to relax in.
The house really lends itself to reading, painting and writing.
